For the past year or two, the French phone manufacturer – Alcatel is trying to re-establish itself as a player in the Philippine’s mobile phone market by creating a number of phone models that cater not only to those on a tight budget but also for those who are looking for handsets that provide performance with reasonable prices.


And until recently, Alcatel has jumped on the Android bandwagon with the addition of several droids in its line-up.  One of the many Android devices that the company offers to consumers is the mid-range Alcatel 916D. Unlike most devices in its class, the 916D is a touch and type device running on Google’s Android OS with a below P10,000 price tag. But with other affordable models from other brands such as those from MyPhone, Cherry Mobile and Lenovo, is the Alcatel 916D has what it takes to be the smartphone of choice to those looking for a mid-range QWERTY android device?

I recently got myself a 916D from my post-paid line and since I noticed that there aren’t many reviews about this phone on the internet, I decided to share my take on how the phone stacks up to veryday use and how it performs on different real life situations.


BASIC SPECS

Before we dive any deeper with this review, here’s a quick snapshot of the Alcatel 916D Spark FB’s specifications. (Taken from Alcatel One Touch website)






WHAT’S IN THE BOX

The box of the 916D follows the same look and feel of most mid-range devices in its class. The box is made out of glossy durable cardboard where all the different images and features of the device are printed. Once you lift the wrap-around cover of the box, you are immediately welcomed by the phone.





The accessories, which include the charger, USB cable, battery, headset and the phone’s documentation are individually wrapped in plastic are all stashed under the paper cradle where the phone initially sits on. For the clumsy user, Alcatel has also included a plastic screen protector, although using it means you have to put it on your own.


DESIGN AND BUILD QUALITY

For a phone that costs below P7,000 the 916D offers above average build quality compared to other devices within the same price range. Although the phone is completely made from plastic, it doesn’t exude a cheap plastic feel, which is probably because the phone has a sophisticated design. It also feels pretty dense which adds more to its premium feel. In fact, the box of the 916D indicates that it has been awarded a 2012 Reddot design award.



The unit that I got was coloured white with silver and grey accents. The back cover of the phone is made from glossy white plastic which gives it a very chic look, but at the same time may cause trouble as it could be very prone to scratches and dirt. When it comes to the front of the device, almost half of its façade is occupied by the QWERTY keyboard, four capacitive buttons below the screen and the optical track pad that sits just below it.

At the bottom of the phone is where the micro-USB port for syncing and charging is located. At the left of the device is where you will find the dedicated camera button (quite large, if you ask me), at the right side you will find the volume rocker and at the top is where the 3.5mm audio jack and the lock/unlock button are placed. The 5MP camera is found at the back as well as the LED flash and the audio grille. The top of the screen is where the proximity sensor is located alongside the company’s logo.

To sum it all up, the overall design of the 916D is pretty good; however, one would definitely notice the resemblance of its design to other popular phones in the past such as the Blackberry Curve and the HTC ChaCha. In fact this phone has the same “Facebook” button found on HTC’s messenger phone.


SOFTWARE

The Alcatel 916D runs on Android gingerbread v.2.3.6 with minor skinning from Alcatel, including that of the launcher, the messenger, camera, dialer and the contacts app. Majority these apps are highly customized for the phone’s uncommon screen resolution and dual-SIM capability. The messenger, dialer and contacts app for example have special options that allow users to choose which SIM card to use whenever sending text messages and making phone calls. This makes it very difficult to users to use third party software for messaging and telephony since most developers only create apps for single-SIM devices.


The camera app on the hand uses a very similar UI as the stock vanilla android, with only minor revisions. Aside from controls to take a shot or start recording a video, a single tap on the screen while the camera app is active will reveal several customization options. These include scene mode, picture size, timer, white balance, flash and the digital zoom. The camera can be launched from the app drawer or through the dedicated camera button at the left side of the device. The only thing I wished that the phone camera had was options for zooming in and out using the volume rocker, instead of just the controls on the touchscreen.


The phone also features a customized launcher and lockscreen app. The launcher app has very few customization options for users. The only thing it can do is change the number of homescreens from 3, to 5, to 7. That’s it! (Seriously, that’s it). You can’t even change the size of the widgets, the appearance of icons, screen transitions or the speed of the transitions and the app drawer. And if you’re planning to get yourself a third party launcher, there are only three apps I’ve tried that works with the Spark FB – Launcher Pro and ADW launcher and Go Launcher. So if you’re planning to install fancier launchers like Launcher 7 or MX Launcher, better get yourself prepared to be disappointed.

Another major disappointment is the phone’s lock mechanism. Unlike other touchscreen devices, the 916D doesn’t offer an option to unlock the phone using the touchscreen, or any other means except for the lock/unlock button located at the top of the phone. And the worse part of it is that the phone gets unlocked with a single press of the unlock button, which is quite troublesome if you put your phone in your pocket or in your bag where the unlock button can easily be pressed by accident.


I wished Alcatel would fix this through any update by changing the behaviour of the unlock button to have it unlock the device with a long press instead of just a single press. It would also be nice to have an unlock mechanism using the device’s touchscreen. And speaking of updates, Alcatel hasn’t made a name for itself when it comes to providing future firmware and OS updates, so we’ll have to wait if the company would provide upgrades to this phone.


SOUND, IMAGE and CALL QUALITY

Call quality for the Spark FB is just average. I didn’t experience any dropped calls, at least for my personal contacts, and the line was clear and very audible. However, the story is quite different when it comes to handsfree mode. When I tried using the speaker phone, the sound that came out of the speakers is a little tinny and slightly less audible. I had to place the speakers right beside my ear just so I could hear the sound clearly.

When it comes to multimedia playback, the volume of the speakers is at par with other devices, although it still maintains that tinny sound quality. Using the headsets provide little improvement to the phone speakers. The headset is pretty light in weight and gives off a somehow cheap feel; and even though they have average volume and sound quality, a lot of people may dismiss this fact due to their cheap feel.

Images on the other hand are quite good. I’m no photographer or photography expert, so for me, at the very least, the images captured by the 5MP camera of the Alcatel 916D would be enough. Just like any other android phone out there, you can use different apps to edit and share your photos, including Instagram. Just take note that because the phone has a different resolution, other apps may not work or may work differently on this device (e.g. Instagram).


PERFORMANCE

The 916D has entry level specs including a 650MHz processor with 256MB of RAM so no one in their right mind would expect that this phone would provide stellar performance. Nevertheless, I ran a Quardrant benchmark test just to give us an idea of how it does on synthetic benchmark tests. On the average, the Spark FB got a Quadrant score of 592.

On the plus side, it seems Alcatel made a good job on optimizing the 916D when it comes to performance. Even with entry level specs, I didn’t experience too much lag on the device even with the live wallpaper on. The only time I experienced lag on the device is when Wi-Fi is open.


VERDICT

To sum it all up, the Alcatel 916D is a very interesting phone that offers the barebones Android experience topped with a QWERTY keyboard. If you’re looking for a phone that help you send texts and make calls and you’re still looking for a phone that can provide features better than a feature phone, then the Spark FB is the phone for you. It does however, suffer from a few kinks, but if Alcatel can get this issues straightened through an update, it can easily become the phone of choice for a lot of Filipinos. And with a SRP of around P6,100 the Alcatel 916D is quite an affordable phone even for the most tight budget technophiliacs.

There was a time when dual-SIM phones were exclusive to low end feature phones and China-made clone phones. This was because dual-SIM phones primarily targeted consumers who are looking for a way that will allow them to make use of 2 phone numbers while using just one device. And although this feature might have been very useful to businessmen and company executives, the limitation of dumb phones in terms of usability and features was a big letdown which hampered the widespread adoption of dual-SIM phones especially in the business sector.


Today’s market though is different. The phenomenal success of Android has allowed mobile phone manufacturers to produce low cost devices with intelligent operating systems. We’ve listed a few examples of these phones that are currently or soon to be available in a shopping center near you.

Cherry Mobile Handsets
The proudly Filipino company Cherry Mobile is possible the best example of how Android has revolutionized the smartphone market. Unlike other companies (with the exception of Gigabyte), Cherry Mobile offers the most dual-SIM android phones in the market. These include the Orbit, Stellar and Candy models.

  • Orbit (Budget) – The Cherry Mobile Orbit sits at the bottom of the company’s android offerings. It packs Android 2.2 Froyo, 256MB RAM, a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, multimedia playback functionality, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 5MP back camera, micro SD expansion slot and a 1260mAH battery.

  • Candy (Budget) – Another entry level phone for Cherry Mobile is the Candy. It’s available in either a full touch bar phone or a QWERTY phone with a small touchscreen. Its specs sheet is almost identical to the Orbit. However, the Candy models only have resistive touchscreens instead of the orbit’s capacitive touchscreen. The battery was also downgraded from 1260mAH to 1000mAH.

  • Stellar (Entry) ­– The Stellar is the company’s most powerful dual-SIM android phone. The phone is practically a rebranded Gsmart G1315 skate. It boasts a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, 256MB RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, 5MP autofocus rear camera, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, multimedia playback functionality, 1500mAH battery and a micro SD expansion slot.


Alcatel Blaze Duo (Entry) – Alcatel is also one of a few companies that offer affordable android phones. The company was practically invisible for some time especially when android started becoming the main player in the mobile phone market. This was actually a good move for Alcatel since they were able to regroup and create a new set of mobile phones powered by android.


Out of their fleet of droids, the Blaze Duo OT-918N is one of two of their dual-SIM phones. It sports Android 2.3 Gingerbread, 256MB of RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.2-inch LCD display, a 3.15MP rear camera, FM radio tuner, micro SD expansion slot, accelerometer, HSDPA and a 1300mAH battery.

LG Optimus Net Dual (Entry) – This phone from Korean manufacturer LG is the first dual-SIM offering of the company. It has a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 180ppi, 512MB of RAM, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, HSDPA data connectivity, a 3.15MP camera at the back and a VGA front-facing camera.


It runs on Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread and is powered by an 800MHz ARMv6 processor. It also has an accelerometer, an Adreno 200 GPU, FM radio tuner, micro SD expansion slot, A-GPS and a 1500mAH Li-Ion battery.

LG Optimus L3 E405 (Budget) – Another dual-SIM phone from LG that is bound to hit Philippine shores soon (if it hasn’t landed yet) is the LG Optimus L3. Just like the Net Dual, it packs a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen but with a higher pixel density of 125ppi, 384MB of RAM, HSDPA connectivity, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a 3.15MP rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera with video recording speeds of 24fps.

In the software department, it runs on Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. It’s powered by a Qualcomm MSM7225A Snapdragon Chipset, an 800MHz Cortex-A5 processor and an Adreno 200 GPU. It also features an accelerometer, as well as a proximity sensor and a compass. Aside from that, the built in browser of the L3 supports Adobe Flash and even HTML5.

Samsung Galaxy Y Duos (Budget) – Samsung is currently the biggest manufacturer of android phones. Their galaxy line reaches almost all segments in the market, from low-end to high-performance handsets. So it’s not surprising if they come up with their own dual-SIM droid. Their most popular model for the dual-SIM segment is the Galaxy Y Duos.


The Galaxy Y Duos features an 832MHz processor and runs on Android 2.3 Gingerbread with Toucwiz UI on top. It offers 3G connection on both SIM cards and offer Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It also has 290MB of RAM, a 3.14-inch capacitive touchscreen, 3.15MP rear camera and a QVGA front-facing one, accelerometer, proximity sensor, compass and a 1300mAH Li-Ion battery.

Lenovo A65 (Entry) – Lenovo came a little late in the smartphone race especially here in the Philippines. Their first dual-SIM android phone the A60 enjoyed little to moderate success, so we guess that Lenovo is will try to boost their market share in the country by offering an improved version of the A60 – the A65.


The A65 sports an 800MHz CPU and a PowerVR SGX 531 GPU. IT runs on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and has a 256MB of RAM. It also has a 3.5-inch capacitive display and a 3.2MP rear camera with video recording. And just like any android phone, it has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Lenovo P700 (Mid-range) – For buyers who want more power on their phones, Lenovo also offer the ICS-powered P700. The P700 is the newest model in Lenovo’s droid line and boasts of a 4.0-inch IPS-LCD capacitive multi-touchscreen display. The screen has a resolution of 800x480 pixels with 16M colors.


Its performance specs sheet is also quite notable. It has a 1GHz CPU, MT6575 processor, and a PowerVR SGX6xx GPU. It also has 512MB of RAM, 755MB of internal memory, a micro SD expansion slot, a 5.0MP rear-facing camera with autofocus and a front-facing VGA camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, FM tuner, accelerometer, proximity and light sensor, GPS with A-GPS support and an amazing 25100mAH battery.

HTC Desire V (Mid-range to High-end) – The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC has been known to produce the most stylish and well-rounded phones in the market today. With impeccable design, after sales support and intuitive UI, HTC phones have always branded its products to target executives and consumers with considerable purchasing power. So it’s a little bit surprising that they created a phone for this segment of the market.


Their first dual-SIM phone, the Desire V sports a Qualcomm MSN7227A Snapdragon chipset, a 1GHZ Cortex-A5 processor and an Adreno 200 GPU and runs the latest version of android – Android 4.0 Ice cream sandwich. It has a 4.0-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels at a pixel density of 223 ppi. In terms of storage, it has 4GB of onboard storage and 512MB of RAM.

Other specs include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, HSPA data transfer speeds, 5MP autofocus rear camera, accelerometer, proximity sensor and compass, FM tuner, 1650mAH battery and Beats Audio sound enhancement software.

The dual-SIM market segment of the mobile phone industry has undeniably experienced some changes. The devices offered in this segment of the market are no longer isolated to feature phones and China-made clone phones. As cellphone technology becomes cheaper and cheaper and as competition among various brands become stiffer, we are slowly seeing that even huge companies such as LG, Samsung and HTC are realizing the potential for dual-SIM phones.

The only question that remains is if this trend would continue to expand in the future. Our best bet is as good as yours. What do you think?



During the last quarter of 2011, Samsung rolled out its new naming system for its future line of mobile phones. This shift in naming system marks an important point for the company’s branding and marketing efforts. In contrast to Samsung’s previous naming system for its mobile devices, the new naming convention clearly defines the market and target audience in which a specific phone or line of phones is designed for. Furthermore, it ties up the company’s entire legion of handheld devices that operate on multiple operating systems. So, whether it be the Galaxy line that runs on Google’s Android, the Omnia line that runs on Windows phone 7 or their very own Bada line that runs on a proprietary OS of the same name, will all follow the new naming scheme.


One particular handset that follows this new naming system is the Samsung i8150 also known as the Samsung Galaxy Wonder (or simply the Galaxy W). The Galaxy W is the Android counterpart of the Samsung Omnia W windows phone and sits just right in the middle of the entire Galaxy line. According to Samsung, the Galaxy W is intended to be a high tier mobile phone catering to a specific group of consumers with a specific set of needs and preferences. But the question is, was Samsung successful in creating the perfect phone for their targeted market? Fortunately, I was able to snag one unit of the Samsung Galaxy Wonder, so I was able to test and review it for everyone’s convenience.

What’s in the Box? The box of the Galaxy W differs from the boxes of Samsung devices of yesteryears which are characterized by shallow and rectangular boxes. Instead, the device came with a tall box where the phone as well as the accessories that came with it are crammed, which is nice since it saves a lot of packaging material which in turn is good for the environment. The unit that I received came in a sealed box, and after breaking the seal, I was welcomed by the device itself covered in plastic and seated in a recycled plastic cradle (which shows yet again, Samsung’s devotion to a greener environment). Removing the plastic cradle will reveal the standard accessories that come with the Galaxy W, which include a data sync USB cable, a travel charger, the phone’s battery, a pair of headset and of course the usual bunch of paper work composed of manuals, start-up guide and warranty card.


The Accessories. In typical Samsung fashion, the Galaxy W came with, shall we say, ordinary set of accessories. The travel charger’s power chord for instance is covered in a thin layer of plastic which can easily break and expose the wiring inside (a typical customer complaint by most Samsung phone users). On the other hand, given that the Galaxy W is placed in the upper tier price range for mobile phones, the headset that came with the device is a little below average. Again, just like the travel charger, the wires of the headset is covered by a thin layer of rubber and it’s very easy for a user (especially those users who are a little bit clumsy in using their devices) to damage it. Moreover, the earpiece of the headset is only covered by plastic with small holes in it as opposed to those in-ear headphones that provide a small degree of noise cancellation.

Device Exterior. Upon removing the plastic bag that envelops the Galaxy W, you will see that the device’s screen is covered by another layer of printed film where the android emblem, as well as other notable features of the phone is printed. There are also plastic films that cover the other sensitive parts of the phone including the camera lens, the center home button and the shiny metallic portions of the phone’s body. The battery cover of the phone is made from plastic which if removed is a little bit flimsy, but fits snugly once the battery is in place. On the plus side, the back cover has this grid texture which adds additional grip for users to hold on to.
Galaxy W Exterior
The overall dimensions of the Galaxy W are very similar to the very popular Galaxy Ace, except for the slightly larger screen of the W and its less boxier and edgier body. The button layout of the phone is also similar to the Ace with the right side of the device being occupied by the singular power/lock button. The volume rocker keys are located at the left side of the phone while the headset jack and the USB port is located at the top of the device. The USB port on the phone is now covered by a sliding gate as opposed to previous Galaxy models that have a flip cover. At the back, you can see the 5MP camera with flash and the company’s name embossed at the bottom part of the back cover just above the loudspeaker grille.

The front side of the device is occupied by the 3.7 inch S-LCD display, the phone’s ear piece which sits just above the Samsung branding. The top right corner of the device is where the front-facing VGA camera is located.  Ambient light sensors and proximity sensors are on the left side of the speaker grille. At the bottom of the device is where the lone physical home button is located. If you go further down you will find a small pin hole which is the microphone.

Computing Power. The amount of computing power infused in the Galaxy W looks like it was taken out of the spec sheet of the first generation Galaxy S. For starters, the phone comes with a 1.4 Ghz single core scorpion processor which ensures that users will have enough power when it comes to running applications and games. It also has the typical 512MB of RAM to complement the speedy processor and a Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon chipset. And to top it all, the Galaxy W has a built in HDD of about 1.7 GB to store all those applications, games and multimedia content. The phone also comes with a micro SD card expansion slot in case the 1.7 GB of HDD space is not enough for you. Visuals. When placed side by side to the Samsung Galaxy Spica, it is evident that the W is almost identical when it comes to its overall dimensions. However, it’s good to note that the Galaxy W was able to optimize better on screen real estate as it packs a 3.7 in WVGA screen as opposed to the Spica’s 3.2 inch screen. Its screen resolution is at 480x800 pixels and the pixel density is around 252 pixels per inch with around 16 million colours. In general, the screen of the Galaxy W provides images that are crisp, bright and clear; and for the untrained eye, it wouldn’t be too easy to see the difference between the Galaxy W’s display and those AMOLED or NOVA displays from other models.
Camera App
The Galaxy W features one 5MP camera at the back with autofocus and LED flash and one front facing VGA camera for video calls and taking self-portraits. The camera app is customized by Samsung and features photo effects for photo addicts. Within the camera app, users will be able to choose scenes or settings for portrait mode, landscape, night, sports and even fireworks mode.  Users can also choose three basic photo effects such as negative, grayscale and sepia. Other camera features also include the ability to change the ISO settings, exposure value, timer, resolution, white balance, GPS tagging, enabling and disabling the flash and controlling white balance. And if that’s not enough, the phone also come with a separate more comprehensive photo editing app that features additional photo effects like lens blur, ghost effects, speed line effects, color saturation & contrast, warping, image rotating and cropping. Audio. Call quality is okay with the W. During the first 7 days that I tested the device, I didn’t experience any dropped calls or choppy phone conversations, although pumping the volume up while on a call can decrease sound quality and clarity. The loudspeaker is average, but since it is located at the back of the device, users should turn the phone with the back side up in order to hear the sounds come out properly, otherwise it’s all muffled. If the truth should be told, the Galaxy W is not a multimedia powerhouse in contrast to the HTC Sensation XE that we saw a few weeks back. But the good thing is that it’s not too far behind. Even though it doesn’t have the premium Beats audio headset that the HTC has, it makes up through an audio improvement software. The W sports an audio equalizer with customizable settings as well as a dedicated menu for sound effects that will help enhance a user’s audio experience. The music player also packs a 5.1 channel surround sound feature, although this only works if the headset is connected. It also comes with a radio receiver with RDS if you’re getting bored with your playlist and want to get some fresh music into your ears.


The Standard Android Stuff. The Galaxy W runs the latest version of gingerbread. And as such, it comes with the typical bells and whistles that an android phone has. It has the latest version of the android market, the latest version of Gmail, the android mobile browser, Google Maps, gallery app, Google Talk, Voice search and the most up to date version of Youtube for android. Other than that, everything else is just from Samsung or from third party sources.


User interface. Just like any other major cell phone manufacturer in the industry, Samsung has come up with their flavour on top of the standard vanilla interface by android and it’s called Touchwiz. Since the early years of android, Samsung was one of the first to add a skin overlay to the default android UI, and in recent years, Touchwiz has gone through some major upgrades. It is currently on its fourth reincarnation and adds a few more on the plate other than a custom launcher and a bunch of Samsung branded widgets. For starters, a great number of apps have been skinned and revamped to match the general look and feel of Touchwiz. The calendar app for example took a few hints from the calendar app of iOS. You now can’t use kinetic scrolling to flip through calendar months but instead you use arrows to move through the list. The phonebook and dialler app on the other hand took some features of from Samsung’s own Bada OS with the addition of a few more tabs and the left and right swipe gesture actions for messaging and making calls. Aside from skinned apps, Touchwiz also brings forth specialized apps that are exclusively available to Samsung android phones. These include Samsung’s game hub which is an application that aggregates all available game apps that are compatible with the phone. The game hub is segregated into two different tabs. The first tab displays all social games that are compatible with the Galaxy W while the second tab lists all games that come from major gaming app developers such as Gameloft, EA games, Glu and GMO. There's also a social hub that aggregates all your social feeds into one app. These include all your Facebook and twitter feeds. A task manager is also included that allows users to terminate apps that are resource intensive. There’s even a Samsung market app where you can buy special apps developed by Samsung software engineers and developers. But of all the specialized Touchwiz 4 apps that come preinstalled on the device, the most useful by far would be Kies air. Kies air is a special app that allows for the wireless transfer of files and content through a wi-fi network.
Homescreen, App Drawer and Lock screen
The process of adding desktop widgets was also changed. Widgets are now shown in a horizontal configuration in contrast to a vertical list in most android devices. Moreover, widgets are now represented by icons that move in a wave like manner on a 3D carousel. You can again resize widgets once they are placed on the desktop. Users can also move them around by dragging and dropping the widgets around the screen or across different panels; and just like LG’s Optimus UI, there are markers to tell you the amount of space a particular widget will take on your desktop. The only complain I had about this new widget interface menu is that you won’t be able to see the available widget sizes on a particular app. So, you might have to guess which apps will have widgets with different sizes by doing some trial and error. Users will now also have the option of customizing their lock screen on a slightly higher level than most basic android devices. Users are now allowed to have a different lock screen wallpaper and desktop wallpaper. The W also uses a different unlocking feature than most Samsung droids. Instead of having a sliding tab at the bottom of the screen, or a puzzle piece for device unlocking, users can now just touch the screen and drag the circle in any direction to unlock the device (looks similar to ICS lock screen). This new lock screen is visually pleasing but can sometimes be annoying especially when you’re trying to take your phone out of your pocket and you accidentally touched the screen causing it to unlock prematurely. Lastly, there’s the Samsung keyboard. The W doesn’t have the standard android gingerbread keyboard that comes with the operating system. But rather, it has Samsung’s own keypad app. It looks very similar to the default android keyboard but with extra features. In general, the Samsung keyboard is easy to use but is a little bit smaller than what I had in mind. There’s also no haptic feedback when pressing the keys. There’s also SWYPE keyboard that’s already installed but unless the language that you are using is supported by SWYPE, you would still need to manually add the words that you most frequently use to its dictionary before you can maximize the use of the swipe input method.
Default Keyboards
Software Updates.  The Galaxy W currently runs Android 2.3.6 which is the latest version for gingerbread. As of the moment, Samsung has yet to announce if this device would get a taste of Android 4.0 better known as ice cream sandwich (ICS). Currently, the only Samsung devices that are scheduled to get the update are the Galaxy Nexus, the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy Tablets. There are, however, alternatives if you’re really desperate on getting those much needed software updates. If you’re feeling brave and don’t mind losing the phone warranty, rooting and installing a custom ROM will allow you to get unofficial software updates from developers. A popular destination for custom firmware downloads would be the XDA developers’ forum. There are already several CFW’s for the Galaxy W available for download on the site which brings about improvements in the overall performance of the device. Some of which are promising reduced memory usage, overclocked CPU’s and improved graphics.
Sample Benchmark scores
Benchmark Tests. Being the capable device that it is, the Galaxy wonder performed well on benchmark tests. For this review, I used quadrant and antutu scores to have some numerical values to represent its processing and graphics rendering prowess. On the average, the Galaxy W scored around 1,420 on quadrant which places it just below the Galaxy Nexus but better than the Nexus S. Antutu scores on the other hand are on the average at 3,603 which is a higher than the Samsung Nexus S but is lower than the HTC Evo 3D.


Final Words. The Samsung i8150 Galaxy W is placed right in the middle of Samsung’s entire Galaxy line. It is positioned as a high tier device above the entry level Galaxy Y and the mid-range Galaxy M; and positioned just below the premium phones of the R and S series. It is intended to cater to advanced smartphone users who are in need of a capable device for their busy and mobile lifestyle. These users need a phone that can act as a substitute for their laptops and tablets, to help them view documents and business files on the go as well as provide them with enough entertainment in terms of music, video and games. With a price tag of around 16,500-18,500PHP, the Galaxy W can be a very good contender for most people. If you’re the kind of user that puts computing and processing power as a top priority, I’m sure you’ll be more than happy with this device.  However, if you’re looking for a more budget friendly phone that offers a slightly slower CPU, you might want to check out offerings from Sony like the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray which is around 3000PHP cheaper or the Xperia NEO V which is around 4,000PHP less than the W.
