The Filipino Almusal

Health experts say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. However more and more Filipinos are slowly taking for granted the nutritional benefits of having a proper breakfast every morning. This is particularly bad for one’s health as doing this prevents our bodies from getting the necessary nutrition that it needs.

And to be honest, we Filipinos have a very rich selection of breakfast goodies which would really be such a waste if people don’t take advantage of them. Here are some sumptuous Filipino breakfast meals that will certainly jumpstart your mornings.

Pandesal – the pandesal has always been made synonymous to breakfast. There are several varieties of stores to choose from when buying pandesal. For those with a tight budget, this type of bread can be bought in even small bakeries in rural neighborhoods. There are also commercialized versions of the bread such as those from Pan de Manila or Pantoja’s Bakery.

Torta – Torta is actually Spanish in origin. The basic ingredient of torta is egg, which can be mixed with a variety of ingredients from vegetables, meat and fish. The most well-known way of cooking torta is with an eggplant, otherwise known as tortang talong. Just like any fried dish, tortas are best eaten with a healthy dose of ketchup.

Sinangag – Sinangag is the Filipino term for fried rice. Filipinos usually cook sinangag to maximize the use of left over rice from dinner the previous night. However, a lot of fast food chains as well as “Carinderias” are now making sinangag even from freshly cooked rice. Sinangag is not only a delicious base for any complete meal but it can also stand on its own especially if it’s made with eggs and mixed vegetables.

Silog Meals – Log meals are sets of meals that usually involve 3 or more components. First is the fried rice or sinangag (SI), second is the egg (LOG – from itlog) and the third would be a protein component. The most popular variant would be the tapsilog (Tapa-sinangag-itlog), tocilog (tocino-sinangag-itlog) and longsilog (longganisa-sinangag-itlog).

The silog meals have slowly evolved new varieties, including cornsilog (corned beef), hotsilog (hotdog) and chicksilog (fried chicken) to name a few. Silog meals is possibly one of the most popular breakfast meals in the Philippines and can be bought from carinderias, fast food chains and even in 5-star hotel breakfast menus.

Kape or Hot Choco – Coffee or hot choco is usually the drinking partner of the food mentioned above. Filipinos enjoy a wide choice of coffee blends. The most convenient type of coffee or hot choco is the instant coffee or choco which you can buy in supermarkets and convenient stores. There’s also a freshly brewed version which (if you have the time) you can do in your homes, or if you’re a little bit busy can be bought in medium to high-end shops like starbucks.
