The Nostalgic Pinoy: Multicolored Heroes

If you think that Naruto or Ben10 are the best super heroes this world has ever seen, then you clearly haven’t seen the multicolored super heroes of yesteryears. Unlike Naruto, Bleach, Ben10 and the rest of today’s gang of evil fighting characters, these heroes always come in groups that are well choreographed, photogenic and most of all color coordinated.

Here’s a nostalgic treat for all of you who grew watching a group of 5 young individuals that transform themselves into tight-fitting, helmet wearing crime-busting super heroes from the late 80s to mid-90s.

AURA MASK!

Hikari Sentai Maskman (Laser Squadron Maskman) was first aired on IBC 13 and talks about how five people recruited by commander Sugata is fighting the Underground Empire Tube who wants to dominate the world. The team is composed of Takeru (Red Mask), Kenta (Black Mask), Akira (Blue Mask), Haruka (Yellow Mask) and Momoko (Pink Mask).

Their mecha is the Great Five, whose components are stored in the Turbo Ranger – a carrier mecha hidden behind a great waterfall. Later in the series, they acquire a second mecha known as the Land Galaxy.

SUPER FIVE BALL!

Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman was first aired on ABC5 and is about five siblings who were orphaned due to the Zone Empire. The children’s father, Dr. Hoshikawa was researching on how to transform the barren planet of Sedon to a lush world full of life when the Zone Empire attacked the planet.

After the children got separated from Dr. Hoshikawa and his wife, their support robot – Arthur G6 took them to Earth where they developed the Fiveman technology in preparation in case the Zone Empire decides to invade Earth. The Fivemen are composed of Gaku (Five Red), Ken (Five Blue), Fumiya (Five Black), Kazumi (Five Pink) and Remi (Five Yellow).

Their main mecha is Five Robo and Star Five which can combine together to form Super Five Robo or combine with their Magma Base to form their ultimate mecha – Max Magma.

BIO MIRACLE WAVE!

Choudenshi Bioman is the story of the five descendants of 5 people who were infused with bio particles when Bio Robo and Peebo arrived on Earth during 15th century Japan. Five centuries later, these descendants are chosen to fight against the Neo Gear Empire who plans to take over the planet.

The Bioman team is composed of Shiro Go (Red One), Shingo Takasugi (Green Two), Ryuta Nanbara (Blue Three), Mika Koizumi and Jun Yabuki (Yellow Four) and Hikaru Katsuragi (Pink Five). Their mecha is the carrier ship, Bio Dragon that carries the Bio Jet One and Bio Jet Two which when combined witll form the Bio Robo.

The first episode of Bioman was aired on ABS-CBN in 1988.

SMASH BOMBERS!

Chojin Sentai Jetman talks about the story of five individuals who gained super human abilities when they were infused by Birdonic Waves (a technology developed by a fictional military organization called Sky Force) and their fight agains the Vyram, an outer-dimensional organization whose goal is inter-dimensional domination.

The members of the Jetman team are Ryu Tendou (Red Hawk), Gai Yuki (Black Condor), Raita Ooishi (Yellow Owl), Kaori Rokumeikan (White Swan) and Ako Hayasaka (Blue Swallow). Their mecha of choice is the Jet Icarus and Jet Garuda which when combined forms the Great Icarus.

TURBO LASER PLASMA SHOOT!

Kousoku Sentai Turboranger or simply the Turboranger is composed of Riki Honoo (Red Turbo), Daichi Yamagata (Black Turbo), Youhei Hama (Blue Turbo), Shunsuke Hino (Yellow Turbo) and Haruna Morikawa (Pink Turbo) who were showered with the “flames of spirit” of the fallen fairies when they were still young which gave them the ability to hear the voice of Seelon – the last of the fairies.

Their enemies are the Boma tribe who were sealed away some twenty thousand years ago by humans and fairies. But due to modern day pollution and destruction of nature, the power of the seal of the fairies has weakened, allowing the Boma Tribe to escape.

With the help of Dr. Dazai, a scientist who was contacted by Seelon and the one who developed the turboranger technology including their mechas, the five Turborangers are left with the task of restoring peace on Earth by defeating the Boma Tribe.

IT’S MORPHIN TIME!

The last and the only American group in the list is Saban Entertainment’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It’s one of the longest running Power Ranger series on TV that lasted for three seasons from 1993 to 1995.

The team is composed of Jason Lee Scott (Red Ranger), Zack Taylor (Black Ranger), Billy Cranston (Blue Ranger), Trini Kwan (Yellow Ranger), Kimberly Ann Hart (Pink Ranger) and Thomas “Tommy” Oliver (Green/White Ranger). The main protagonists in the series is Rita Repulsa (Soga Machiko and Carla Perez) and Lord Zedd which was voiced by Robert Axelrod.

Being the longest running Power Ranger show, the team have a long list of mechas, which they call zords. The first set was called dinozords which consists of dinosaur themed zords (Tyrannosaurus, Mastodon, Triceratops, Saber-Toothed Tiger and Pterdactyl) which form the original megazord.

And that’s it. The multicolored super heroes of the past decade. We hope you liked it. If you have any comments and suggestions, please do leave them in the comment box below. Also, don’t forget to follow us on Twitter and like us on Facebook!
