We Filipinos have always been a fan of
bread and pastry. From the pandesal that we have every morning to the chocolate
cakes we enjoy as dessert in a sumptuous dinner, the bread plays an important
role not only in keeping our stomach’s satisfied but also to help us keep
healthy by providing us a good source of carbohydrates to power us through the
day.
And with numerous coffee shops slowly
popping out in and around the metro, our demand for bread and pastry to go hand
in hand with coffee has also increased. The number of commercial doughnut shops
for instance and the products they sell have slowly risen in the past two years
or so. This provides a bigger variety for consumers to choose from.
If you’re not sure what kind of doughnut to
get yourself whenever you want to have coffee or a simple merienda, then worry
no more because we’ve got your back. We’ve listed five shops you can go to in
case you’re craving for that sweet and delicious doughnut.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Dunkin’s Donuts is one of the oldest
doughnut shops in the world. It was first established in the 1950s by William
Rosenberg and has since been one of the most popular stores for buying
doughnuts. But it was only in 1981 when Golden Donuts, Inc (GDI) brought the
brand in the Philippines.
There are currently over 500 branches of
Dunkin’ Donuts spread all over the country that offer not only doughnuts, but
also offer hot and cold coffee, muffins, brownies, croissants, and even gourmet
sandwiches.
Mister Donut
Another well-known doughnut shop for the
masses is Mister Donut. Founded originally in Boston, USA in 1955, Mister Donut
reached Philippine shores in 1982 and currently has over 2,000 branches
nationwide.
Unlike Dunkin’ Donuts, Mister Donut has
maximized partnerships with other merchants that allow the company’s doughnuts
to be sold other stores like 7-eleven and other convenient stores.
However, just like Dunkin' Donuts, this store offers one of the most affordable collection of doughnuts for the common Filipino, with prices for a piece of doughnut not exceeding 20 or 30 pesos.
GoNuts Donuts
GoNuts Donuts is the only proudly Filipino
doughnut maker in the country that can compete head to head with Dunkin’ Donuts
and Mister Donut. The brand was first conceived in 2001 through the efforts of
one Noel de Ocampo of Doughnut People, Incorporated. And after 2 ½ years-worth
of R&D efforts, the brand has finally perfected its recipe.
Today, the company has about 20 branches in
Metro Manila and a few more in other parts of Luzon and Davao. Their menu is
primarily composed of affordable coffee, doughnuts, pocket pies, and pizza
inspired doughnuts.
