Since the inception of MTV back in August
of 1981, the music channel has become a trend setter in the lives of teens and
young adults. For over three decades MTV has defined what’s cool and what’s not
and serve as a lifestyle guide to many.
Aside from the music videos that the
network plays 24/7 all throughout the year, MTV also prides itself in creating
one of a kind shows that not only provides a source of entertainment but a way
to distress from a hard day’s work. Sadly, some of these shows have come to an
end, but of course it won’t stop wishful thinkers into hoping that these shows
will soon be back.
Here are 5 of the best shows from MTV that
have already thrown in the towel but we wish were still here.
Boiling
Points – Boiling points is a prank reality TV show on
MTV that was first shown on January 5, 2004. Each episode of the show runs for
about 30 minutes and features ordinary people who are unaware that their
tempers will be tested through a specific scenario or situation.
While being watched via a hidden camera, a
specific amount of time is set depending on how annoying the situation will be.
If after the specified time and the subject has succeeded in refraining in
displaying anger or temper, use obscene words or storm off before the
predefined time; he or she will win $100.
Although very entertaining, the show never
made it to 2005 and was eventually sacked by MTV.
Pimp
My Ride – Pimp my Ride is another iconic MTV show. The
show’s first episode aired on March 4, 2004 and was hosted by rapper Xzibit.
Each episode consists of taking a poorly maintained car from one individual and
repairing and customizing it by the end of the show.
The show’s host, Xzibit, usually starts off
the show by picking up the car in the owner’s house and doing a little bit of
tour of the car. He then drives the car to West Coast Customs (WCC) a custom
body shop to be repaired, upgraded and customized. Before the episode ends, the
car owner is invited over at WCC and the improved car is then revealed.
Pimp my ride enjoyed huge success, running
from 2004 to 2007. It also enjoyed worldwide popularity serving several international
versions in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and South America.
Daria – Daria is an animated series on MTV created by Susie Lewis and
Glenn Eichler that tells the story of a smart, sarcastic and sometimes
misanthropic teenage girl named Daria Morgendorffer. The first episode of the show
was first aired on December 29, 1996 and was set in Lawndale – a fictional
American suburban neighbourhood.
During its five years in MTV, Daria
received rave reviews and by 1998 was considered as one of the network’s highest
rated shows. This success was primarily due to how intelligent and
well-thought-of the character was portrayed in the series. According to Van
Toffler, one of the network’s executives, Daria was “a good spokesperson for MTV,
intelligent yet subversive”.
The series ran for five years, with a total
of 65 episodes (13 episodes per season) with the last episode shown on January
21, 2002.
Jackass – Jackass was an MTV reality show that features people performing
dangerous and stupid stunts and pranks on themselves. The show stars Johnny
Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, Chris Pontius and Jason “Wee-Man” Acuña.
The show received mixed reception during
the time it was aired on the network. Although a lot of their viewers found
their stunts and antics as fun and entertaining, there are a number of people
who got concerned about the show serving as bad examples to the youth.
After its third season, the negative
reception on the show’s stunts had caused friction between the show and MTV’s
management, so on February 17, 2002, the crew of Jackass called it quits and
the show abruptly ended.
Celebrity
Death Match – the MTV Celebrity Death Match is a Claymation
TV show that depicts celebrities fighting inside a wrestling ring. The show originally
stars Maurice Schlafer/Jim Thornton as the voice of Johnny Gomez, Len
Maxwell/Chris Edgerly as the voice of Nick Diamond and Mills Lane as himself.
The series went on air for the first time
on May 14, 1998 and became very popular because of its gory fight scenes
between two or more celebrities yet at the same time being comedic. 75 episodes
later, Celebrity Death Match aired its last episode on October 20, 2002 when
the network decided to cancel the show.
And that’s it, for our top 5 discontinued
MTV shows that we wish was still on air today. If you have other shows in mind,
